The World-Famous Guitarist Finds His True Purpose

For He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with goodness. (Psalm 107:9)

Christopher Parkening considered the world's greatest classical guitarist, achieved his musical dream at thirty years old. At that time, he was also a world-class angler. But his success failed to bring happiness. Tired of shows and recordings, Parkening bought a farm and left the guitar. However, his life became increasingly empty after he left all the things he loved. He wrote, "If you get to the point where you have everything you want and think that all of those things can make you happy but don't find that happiness, then you start to wonder. It was a golden pot at the end of the rainbow. I've got it, and I'm thinking, "What's still missing?"

While visiting friends, Christopher attended church and put his faith in Christ. Parkening experienced a thirst for God's word and was rebuked by 1 Corinthians 10:31, "Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God." He explained, "I realized that there were only two things I knew: fishing and playing the guitar. Now I play guitar because of God's grace – I have joy, peace, and accomplishment in my life that I never had before. My life has a purpose – I learned the true secret of genuine happiness."

Reflection: Anyone who wants to feel true happiness must have a heart that seeks and focuses on the Lord. That's why God's word states that the truth will lead us to happiness and that truth is found in Jesus.

God gives you joy in this world, not just to be enjoyed by you, but to make a difference in the world around you.
