Praising God

Many ask why God demands praise and worship. The answer is not an easy one. Through the Bible, a person can come to know God’s nature and greatness. A person who recognizes that God is the greatest and only authority in the universe will be able to render to Him all glory, honor, praise, and power. Praise is the proper response to God’s authority. Praise is the acknowledgment that there is only one God—one Creator, Judge, and Giver of life. Therefore, He only is worthy of being recognized as the all-powerful, and all-knowing God.

Every single book in the Bible is an invitation to render to God praise for the mighty deeds and mercies shown in the many stories and testimonies of countless men and women who received God’s favor. The book of Psalms is entirely devoted to the praises of God and to the acknowledgment that He is a good God, One who inclines His ear to hear our prayers and is ever ready to come to our help. Psalm 100, for example, is a strong invitation to worship God—not that God needs us or anything we have or can do for Him. The book of Revelation tells of countless multitudes ever praising God; thus, God does not need human praise, given that He is always surrounded by angelic creatures ever praising Him. God seeks the acknowledgment of men and women that He is the supreme Authority in all creation, the almighty and sovereign God. Nevertheless, He seeks a willing heart to approach Him in full liberty with thanksgiving and praise. Knowledge is the mother of devotion and obedience. How can servants render gratitude and obedience to a Master they do not know?  

Furthermore, God has revealed Himself as infinitely perfect, self-existent, and self-sufficient.  He is an eternal Spirit, incomprehensible and independent. Many cultures have worshipped a creature of their own making, but God’s people have worshipped the God who made us. He formed both our bodies and our spirits. The Bible says that He made us, and not we ourselves. Therefore, we are not our own, but His. He has an incontestable right to us and to all things.
