The Poor Rich Man

DAY 4 OF 5

THE PRIDE AND JOY OF GIVING

Perhaps you have already learned not to worry about tomorrow. You decide to help others in need. What an awesome feeling! Jesus was right! "'It is more blessed to give than to receive'" (Acts 20:35, NLT). Something to be proud of. Or not?

It is very easy to fall prey to pride when we are in a position of helping others. We love to receive words of thanks and appreciation when we give to others. We are extremely grateful that we are not in the receiver's unfortunate position.

Humility is one of the most important characteristics that Jesus displayed during His time on Earth. "Though he was God, he did not think of equality of God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave" (Philippians 2:6-7, NLT).

How do you stay humble when you are wealthy? Jesus gives valuable advice in Matthew 6. "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you" (Matthew 6:3-4, NIV).

Are you in a position to help others financially? Would you still be willing to give if no one knew it was you?

Experience the true joy of giving by staying humble. "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor" (James 4:10, NLT).

About this Plan

The Poor Rich Man

What emotions do you experience when you see someone who is wealthy? Perhaps envy or distrust? In Mark 10, Jesus felt intense compassion for a rich man He interacted with. In this plan, we will explore why financial prosperity often makes it hard to follow Christ. I hope that you will discover a whole new dimension of God's love for people from all walks of life.
