Through the Bible: PsalmsSample
Fly Away
Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. (Psalm 55:6a ESV)
Psalm 55 is another lament psalm, a prayer cry for God’s help. David’s life was in crisis. He was overwhelmed with fear and heartache. He wanted to fly away from the troubles in his life.
As we face problems and challenges, hard pressed by circumstances beyond our control during the pandemic, do you ever feel like flying away, escaping to a safe retreat? Wanting not only physical rest, but also rest for your soul? But escape from reality is not the solution to crisis. David’s plan of action is to turn to God — "I will call upon the LORD and God will rescue me” (Psalm 55:16). That gives us peace on the inside, helping us rise above every problem, fear, and uncertainty.
By faith we can turn to Jesus and His Word, asking the Holy Spirit to carry us to a place of renewal on higher heights. Jesus is our source of hope and strength. Trust God, “casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
Prayer
Thank You, Abba God, that You care for us, and that Jesus is our peace. Forgive us when we allow stress and fear to continue to overwhelm us, taking You out of the picture. Remind us that You are still in control, to not forget Your redemptive love, and that You would never leave us or forsake us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
About this Plan
The word psalm is derived from the Hebrew word tehillim, which means “praises," and the Greek word psallein, which means “to pluck.” Thus, Psalms is a collection of poetry sung with stringed instruments. The book records the poets' naked emotions––joy, sorrow, or anger––in the high and low seasons of their life. As John Calvin described it, reading Psalms is like looking into a mirror and seeing our own hearts.
