Living an Ordinary Week: Seeing God in Simplicity

DAY 5 OF 7

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. (Romans 12:1 MSG)

Today is about...Wait for it!

Today is about waiting. For what do we wait?

You and I engage in periods of waiting for exciting things—such as the fish to bite, weddings, births, birthdays, reunions, graduations, restorations, etc.

We also experience periods of waiting for remedies to negative things—such as arguments, illnesses, loss of employment, insurance settlements, custody battles, etc.

As you continue to answer the question, “How will I follow Jesus this year?”—you must include within your answer a word on how you engage in waiting.

How well do you wait?”

Recall Paul’s challenge to us.

Romans 12:1 (MSG)  “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.”

Your waiting times belong in your “everyday, ordinary life”. Therefore, loving and serving God includes inaction. What we do with times of uncertainty matters. Think of the disciples in the early part of Acts. Jesus told them to stay in Jerusalem and “wait for the gift (the) Father promised.” Imagine the consequences if they barged ahead before that great Pentecost day. Waiting for God to do what only God can do was difficult but the wisest decision to make.

Choose today to wait.

Question: How can hindsight help us during our times of waiting?

About this Plan

Living an Ordinary Week: Seeing God in Simplicity

Living a good life is not simple. The ease of doing so is challenged by mundane things such as—busyness, fatigue, lack of focus, forgetfulness. Pastor Mark T. Goodman advocates for appreciating the less-than-extraordinary aspects of life. The simple life includes extraordinary events and less-than-ordinary experiences; yet, ordinary things fill up most of our days. Mark invites you to give The Ordinary Way a try.
