Unleash The Miraculous Every DaySample
DAY 3: CHANGE THE DELIVERY METHOD
Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith. Hebrews 12:2 (AMP)
When the Holy Spirit works through you, it’s an incredibly exciting yet very humbling experience. You know that there is no way you earned the privilege. Actually, it’s not even about you. When he leads you to do or say something, all you need do is trust him and yield yourself to what he’s trying to do.
I experienced this one day when a courier came to deliver a package to my door. He was a long haired, tattooed, biker-type guy, and as he handed me my package I got a strong sense inside that’s hard to explain. All I can say is that one word rose to my mind: suicide.
I took a chance and simply said, “Don’t do it, man.”
At first, he was confused. He let out a few words I won’t mention and asked me again what I was talking about. I calmly responded, “Don’t kill yourself.” His face went from anger to complete shock and he stood motionless for a moment. Then, after looking around to make sure no one was watching, he whispered, “I was going to do it after my shift today. How…how did you know?”
I explained that I was Christian and that sometimes God shows us things when he wants to speak to someone. The man was visibly shaken, and it took him a minute to process what I was saying. But because I put it the way I did, he wasn’t enthralled with me. He was enthralled with God. Slowly he responded, “You really think God cares enough about me to tell you that?”
At that moment, his heart was wide open to hearing more about this God who cared about him enough to communicate to him through a stranger. It happened so naturally. No angels sang the hallelujah chorus. I didn’t bind the spirit of suicide, command anything to go, quote ten verses, explain dinosaurs or engage in a deep, theological discussion.
The Holy Spirit opened a door into this man’s heart, and all I had to do was follow his lead. I shared very simply that Jesus loved him. It wasn’t more complicated than that, and He gave His life to Jesus. It’s so simple. To be Spirit Contemporary, just be yourself.
You don’t have to speak differently or act strangely. If you’re a believer, the Holy Spirit can work with you in the context of your everyday life, and he won’t do it in a way that draws attention to you or makes you seem weird. He can lead you and work through you just as powerfully when you’re at the grocery store or picking your kids up at school as when you are in a church service.
Just practice tuning in to the Holy Spirit’s lead as you reach out to people…and always be sure to keep the focus on Jesus.
