Love
“Pursue … love” (1 Timothy 6:11)
This exhortation to pursue love is not so much about romantic love, but about brotherly love. That’s not an emotion that can come over you, but rather an attitude and virtue that you should pursue. It shows in doing good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10), in showing honor and empathy, and in building up each other spiritually. Jesus even mentions brotherly love as a characteristic of Christians: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
Loving our spiritual brothers and sisters is not always easy, since they are just as imperfect as we are ourselves. They do not always behave nicely. Consequently, it is comforting to know that we must not “produce” brotherly love through our own effort. It is a fruit of the Holy Spirit dwelling in our hearts, fed by the love with which Jesus loves us. We are able to love God and fellow humans, “because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).

When asking people what they want to achieve in life, you will probably hear things like wealth, happiness, safety, and a loving family. These are all good things in themselves, but if we focus on them too much, they can draw us away from God. In order to avoid this, the apostle Paul mentions a different list of life goals we should pursue. Let’s study them one by one.
