Through the Bible: 1 Chronicles

DAY 1 OF 10

Covenantal Heritage

Adam, Seth, Enosh; Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared; Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech; Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.  1 Chronicles  1:1-4 (ESV)
Shem, Arpachshad, Shelah; Eber, Peleg, Reu;  Serug, Nahor, Terah;  Abram, that is, Abraham. 1 Chronicles 1:24-27 (ESV)
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Matt 1:1 (ESV)

The Chronicles were perhaps compiled by Ezra the priest-scribe when a mixed group resettled after the exile. While it maps out a broad kinship, it serves to preserve the Jewish pedigree to set them apart for God's eternal plan, and it evokes Davidic kingship heritage for the coming King.  At each turn of branching, God’s covenant progresses through a man, a family, a tribe, a nation, and ultimately in the person of our King Jesus as revealed by the Gospel, to redeem the world that He so loves.

Prayer:

Lord, Your justice, mercy, grace, and love reach the heavens. You are the author and finisher of our faith. Gather and bless Israel, that many of them will come to the full revelation and covenantal relationship with Christ. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Day 2

About this Plan

Through the Bible: 1 Chronicles

Written in the postexilic period, the books of Chronicles present the history of Israel with a purpose very different from the other historical books like that of Books of Samuel and Kings - to remind the despairing remnants that God’s promise to bring forth a Messiah through the royal Davidic lineage still stands. Heaven and earth will pass away, but the LORD’s faithfulness endures forever.
