It’s Not Us Versus Them

What’s your first thought when you see someone walking through a storm? Certainly, there are times when people are in unfortunate circumstances because of something they have done, but Jesus didn’t say, “Analyze the lives of others so you can figure out where they went wrong.” 

Many times, it’s nothing you did, it’s just a storm you’re going through. Sometimes there’s no secret sin, there’s no big mistake—it’s just life. If we want to be more like Jesus, then our response should not be in blaming and telling others they messed up but in comforting and healing. 

Our most fulfilling life will not be based on criticisms but encouragement. Our calling as people of faith is to help others get through their storms and arrive at a safe harbor. The grace of God is based on no condemnation, no untouchables, no “us” versus “them.” The same sins Jesus paid for you, He also paid for others. The same gap between you and God that Jesus closed, He also closed for others—all we have to do is accept and believe what He did and then start acting according to it. The grace of God is available to make up the difference for everyone who will accept it. This is the true definition of more. 

It makes no sense to have the world falling down around you and have perfect peace at the same time, but you can begin to experience a glimpse of that peace—that sense of more. That doesn’t mean you won’t get hurt, won’t doubt yourselves, won’t want to lash out at those who said bad things about you, but it does mean there will be times when you feel God is with you and you will know that you’ll get through.
