The Heart of the Home
By Elizabeth Moum
The word "homemaker" has always evoked in my mind the image of a 1950’s apron-clad woman staying home cooking and cleaning all day. But when you consider it as 2 words: "home maker", it makes me think of something more: the job of making a house feel like a home. This job belongs to every woman.
When you think of what makes a house a home, do you first think of farmhouse sinks, shiplap, open floor plans, or a certain paint color? Or do images of warmth, joy, and people you love, and happy times come to mind? I think we might all agree that the heart of the home means more than the outward beauty of a home.
One thing I’ve noticed in the Bible is that while man focuses on outward appearances, God looks at the heart. When choosing the next king of Israel, God directed Samuel to choose the youngest and smallest member of the family, whose heart was after God’s heart (See 1 Samuel 16:7), not the best-looking candidate. And as in 1 Peter 3:3,4 that while it’s okay (and even good) to style our hair, wear jewelry and nice clothes, our primary focus should be making the hidden person of our hearts beautiful.
Similarly, I have a feeling that God cares deeply about the heart of our homes – are we loving one another and living in peace? Are we nurturing our own personal relationship with Christ?
As women, we set the tone for our homes. I remember, growing up and visiting my grandparents. As soon as I walked across the threshold I would always feel this sense of warmth, joy, and peace come over me. It was obvious that it was a home where love and peace abounded. While my Grandmother was indeed a talented decorator, what I treasure most is how deeply she loved Jesus and how her home exuded the love of Christ and the joy of the Lord.
I encourage you, dear moms, to make your focus Jesus (Hebrews 12:2a). As you set your gaze on Him, He transforms your heart and makes you and your home a sanctuary of His peace and joy (Romans 15:13).
