Growing Faithfully: Creating a Family Stewardship Garden in Your Backyard

DAY 3 OF 4

Our Part

Has anyone ever called you a “steward”? Probably not - but you are! A steward is a manager of someone else's possessions.

God has given us the authority to be stewards. “You made him ruler over the works of your [the Lord’s] hands; you put everything under his feet” (Psalm 8:6).

Our responsibility is summed up in this verse: “It is required of stewards that one be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). Before we can be faithful, we must know what we need to do.

When you start to play a new board game, you read the instructions before you begin. When you get a new toy you read the manual to learn how it works. We have the ultimate handbook, the Bible, to determine how to handle God’s possessions.

As we begin to study our responsibilities, it is important to remember that God loves and cares for us deeply. He is a God of mercy and grace. He gave us principles to follow because He wants the best for us.

We are to be faithful regardless of how much God entrusts to us. The parable of the talents (a talent was a sum of money) illustrates this. Each man was given a different amount of money and expected to steward it wisely. “It will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent” (Matthew 25:14-15). We are just like these men because God has created each of us with gifts that He intends we use faithfully during our lives on earth.

So let’s go over what we have learned: God owns it all, is in control of it all and provides it all. Our job is to only be faithful!

About this Plan

Growing Faithfully: Creating a Family Stewardship Garden in Your Backyard

When creating a garden, we trust God’s provision to help grow fresh fruit and vegetables for our families to enjoy. But we aren’t looking to create just a garden. We are working on a Stewardship Garden. Our hope for this study is to give you the opportunity to introduce God’s principles of stewardship to your children in a fun and tangible way.
