Fruit of the SpiritSample
Love
When Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit, he mentions love first. This probably is because love is the most important characteristic of God, that should be present in Christians as well. See for example 1 Corinthians 13:13 - “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
When Jesus is asked which one of God’s commandments is most important, He gives the following summary: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).
Loving God and loving others is a right response to our being deeply loved by God Himself: "We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). This love of God transforms our hearts and enables us to love our fellow believers: “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4:11).
