Enjoy the ride

My daughter was on a surfboard before she could walk, but her journey into surfing was pretty bumpy. Once, when she was a toddler, we were at the beach and a freak wave knocked her off her feet. It then proceeded to roll her down the beach. After that, she didn't want to go on the sand, never mind into the water!

Another time she got blown out to sea, as she was so small and the wind so strong. And a little later, her surf coach took her out in waves beyond her ability.

Each of these incidents had an impact, but she kept getting back on the board. She just loved the water.

Today I often stand on the beach or sit in the line-up and watch in awe as she rides a wave her way – with signature grace, poise, and style.

A surfer is something [or someone] you become; it doesn’t just happen. There is a high barrier to entry. There is a massive rite of passage attached to becoming a surfer, and it creates a deep cultural connection, a tribe even.

Becoming a surfer is not standing up in the white-water on a learn-to-surf board. On the other side of years of reef cuts, hammerings, and hold-downs – that’s where a surfer emerges…

What is interesting is that, if you were to speak to my daughter, you would quickly learn that she doesn't always feel that she’s made much of a progression. But for me, I look on with awe and amazement because I’ve had the joy of watching her becoming a surfer. A true surfer.

In some ways, you and I will never leave the shaping bay, and, in another, we will live life to the full in the hands of a Master Shaper – and emerge as the final shape He intended, only when it’s all said and done.

One of my favorite Bible verses is Hebrews 12:2, “Let us look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith”.

Being a follower of Jesus – allowing God to shape us in His own Son’s image over a lifetime – is a beautiful journey.

As you live out your life story, remember that you are in the hands of your Master Shaper, so enjoy the ride.
