Character Practice

DAY 5 OF 6

Practice Grit So You Won’t Quit

Ready for today’s character trait you can learn and practice? It’s a good one. But so many people don’t have it these days. The reason why so few people seem to be outstanding in this trait is because it’s a trait where you actually have to fail, in order to learn.

The mysterious trait? It’s grit. Resilience. It’s a whole lot like perseverance. When you try and try, but you don’t get the outcome you’re hoping for—you fail—but you don’t give up. You keep trying. That’s grit!

It’s some pretty big stuff, actually. Take a look at this tiny book to learn more.

Did you catch that bit at the end? There was some big stuff coming out of that tiny book for sure. It said that you don’t always have to see things through to the bitter end if you’re just making the same mistakes over and over. That’s not grit; that’s foolishness. Big difference.

But be strong when you know you’re doing something that God has called you to do. It’ll take grit to keep loving that kid in your class who’s usually cranky. It’ll take grit to reach your goals in school, sports, arts, Bible reading, or whatever goals you choose to set for yourself. But you’ll learn more about that tomorrow.

And, hey—it’ll take a little grit to finish all the challenges from this Bible Plan, but you can do it!

Ask yourself: What’s something you’re tempted to give up on that actually needs more effort?

Challenge yourself: Today (right now if possible), write down one small goal you can crush to help you achieve whatever you answered from the “Ask yourself” question above. For example, maybe you said you’re tempted to give up on being friends with your little sister. Ugh. She’s so annoying! Make a tiny goal you can crush like: I will write a list of five things I think are good about her and will read that list every morning for a week. Or: I will say one compliment to my sister every day for a whole week.

Pray: God, thank You for teaching me how to keep going—how to have grit. You never call me a failure. You always encourage me to persevere. Your love always perseveres. Thank You for that! In Jesus’ name, amen.
