IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT
When we are filled with the Holy Spirit it produces the fruit of the Spirit in our everyday lives. The input shapes the output. Striving to behave the right way is not the focus of the Spirit-filled life. The focus is to be filled and to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
We can keep in step with the Spirit through reading the Word, prayer, and listening to that still, small voice in our spirit which is often directing us. God speaks to us clearly through His Word and the more we read it, learn it and meditate on it, the more we begin to recognise His voice when He speaks to us.
The Holy Spirit often intervenes in our everyday life, wanting to lead and direct us — we only need to listen and obey. He is our helper.
One night in my early 20’s I was driving home from Sunday night church in the city; I had dropped a few friends home along the way. As I drove down Sydney road into Manly I suddenly heard the words “lock the doors” — I thought it had come through the radio, which was strange because it was switched off. I continued driving down the hill and once again but more urgently this time “lock the doors!” It was enough to make me jump and I quickly locked the car doors. Within seconds as I approached the red traffic lights at the bottom of the hill, I glanced to the left and in the dark could make out a hooded man walking directly towards my car. There were no other cars or people at the intersection, and he quickly and aggressively approached the passenger door grabbing the handle and was very surprised to find it locked! Suddenly he was banging his fists on the window, yelling at me to open the door! He pushed his face against the glass making eye contact with me — I could see he was up to no good. Suddenly the light turned green and I was able to drive safely away! This moment has stuck with me and always reminds me that God is looking out for us and speaks to us through the Holy Spirit.
