Uncommen: House DividedSample
We Cannot Serve Two Masters
Matthew 6:24 - "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."
Do you ever feel like you're at odds when it comes to providing for your family and being with your family? We have to be at our jobs to provide, but we also need to be with our family. Even more, we're called to lead our families.
A friend of mine was interviewing for a job at Apple years ago. He said the job would have an annual income of $450,000 but would require at least 80 hours a week at the office. He asked, "Would you give up seeing your family for 18 months if you could make that much?" Instinctually, I answered, "Not a chance."
Sometimes husbands and fathers have to work that much a week to get by. Others work that much because they enjoy it. Situations vary. Here's what I'd ask you to consider from our verse today.
Matthew says, "You cannot serve God and money." One of the ways we serve God is by leading our family. Whether you work 40 hours a week, 80 hours, or 1 hour, do you serve and lead your family when you're home?
You can't recover time with family. Children grow. They leave. Life changes. If you're in a situation where you can choose your family over your career (and still provide for your family), choose your family. Seek Godly counsel from outside sources as well.
Uncommen Questions:
Would you choose to miss time with your family?
How much do you lead your family?
Uncommen Challenge:
I challenge you and me to take these kinds of "opportunities" to the Throne of God for wisdom. Seek Godly counsel and communicate with your wife before any commitment.
