Day 7
Psalm Seven
Digging Out of Our Pit
The daily routine of homeschooling can feel like a rut which can sometimes lead to a pit. We may not have outside enemies persecuting us as David did in Psalm 7, but we may persecute ourselves by being slaves to the curriculum or routine. There is freedom in homeschooling that allows us to take a day here and there to reset our minds on what is truly important. The Word of God is at the top of that list. Maybe you can’t get away to be refreshed somewhere, but there is a place in the presence of God that brings refreshment. Take a “teacher in-service” day off or a “professional training and research” break and discover what the Word of God has to say about education. In Deuteronomy 6:4-7, we see that what we are to be teaching our children day and night is not math or science, rather teaching them to love the Lord their God with all of their spirit, soul, and body. This is where a Godly education starts and should be the core of our curriculum.
David reveals a pattern throughout the Psalms, and it is apparent in Psalm 7 as well. Whenever David is under the pressure of threat, enemies, or persecution, his trust and reliance on God are always revealed as his stabilizing force. This is a lesson we can learn as home educators. When we have the tough days, when people speak against us, when we doubt our calling, we can do as David did and run full force and lean with all our might on the Lord our God. Psalm 7 declares He will deliver. He will judge. He will establish the just. He will try hearts. He will defend. He will save the upright. And we will “praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.” It is eternally worth a day out of your routine for this kind of reset.
To Do With The Kids:
If you need to take a day to bring your kids out of their pit of too-much-routine, you can set up a little retreat for them just like the ones you love attending. Set up the day with reading, prayer, special foods, crafts, and creative free-time experiences. They will be refreshed!
