100 Days in the New Testament: The Athlete's ChallengeSample
Hanging Up the Jersey
Ready:
"There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 NLT
Set:
As athletes, there are many ways that we attempt to run away from our sins. We can find ourselves trying to attain our fame through athletic success, being popular with our teammates and coaches and think that becoming a professional athlete is the ultimate goal. But Jesus is the only solution to our sin problem.
A 2009 Sports Illustrated study found that 78% of NFL players either filed for bankruptcy or struggle financially once they hang up their jersey and retire. Can you imagine that some of the world’s richest people end up going bankrupt?
On Earth, we all have at least some amount of money to buy things we need–and sometimes things we want. But unfortunately, we are headed for a world where money can’t buy us anything. One day our bodies will pass away and we will appear before the throne of God completely bankrupt. No amount of athletic success, fame, scholarships or winning will be able to help us at that point.
The good news is that when we put our trust in Jesus as our perfect Savior, we are no longer empty-handed. We possess the most precious, priceless commodity in the universe–the blood of Jesus. Instead of us buying our way into Heaven, God does it for us with the blood of Jesus. When we make the decision to trust Jesus with our salvation, we gain everything.
