1 Kings: Walk Before Me FaithfullySample

As Israel hits rock bottom spiritually under Jezebel, God raises up a remarkable prophet, Elijah, who is like Moses in many ways. Boldly Elijah lays down God’s word to the king: there will be no rain except by God’s word (v. 1). This is significant because Baal, the god of Jezebel, was a fertility god and supposedly in control of rain, among other things. 

As the rain dries up, we see God’s miraculous provision in three ways. First, God feeds Elijah by ravens east of the Jordan (vv. 2–7). Second, Elijah is sent by God to Zarephath, in Jezebel’s home territory – an audacious move by God – where again he is fed miraculously, this time by a poor widow. Elijah’s prophecy to her of sufficient meals for them and her son until the rain arrives will come true. Third, when the widow’s son becomes ill, he is revived after Elijah’s prayer (v. 22). Here we see not only the power of God but also his care for widows and the poor. 

These are three miracles of provision and life. Who has power over the rain? Who has power over food supplies? Who has the power over life itself? Not Baal – he has not done or said anything at all. Only Yahweh, the living God, has demonstrated that he has power over all. The lack of rain through this chapter further shows that Baal cannot provide at all, while God’s word rules. 

Why is it that people so often turn to man-made gods? In our major Western cities, we can now buy any food all year round. We are tempted to forget the need for sun, rain and soil for crops and animals. We forget that the living God made the sun and provides the rain to enable plants to grow. With modern technology we are tempted to see humanity, in the place of God, in control of all things.

How can we keep in focus that God is sovereign over this creation? A start would be simply giving thanks for meals; ensuring we pray regularly for rain and sun; and taking care of this world as good stewards, in the face of human despoliation of it. What else can you do?
