Lent 2021: A Story to Live By

DAY 37 OF 47

The impossible possible

Reflection:

As the first lockdown set in last March, I watched my diary rapidly empty. So many plans and ideas cancelled. I wondered what it looked like to serve God in this new season.

But as I slowed down, God reminded me of a simple and profound lesson: the world is changed through faithful prayer. Through simple conversation or passionate shouts, God hears our cries and invites us to participate in his restorative work in the world.

In November this year, world leaders will be discussing their plans to tackle climate change at COP26, the UN’s climate talks. It’s a crucial moment for our global neighbours, who are already seeing their communities devastated by increasingly severe droughts, floods and storms.

Walter Wink, the theologian and activist, once said ‘History belongs to the intercessors—those who believe and pray the future into being’. I believe God is inviting us to pray big, courageous prayers this year for a better world.

Prayer:

Dear God, help us to be a people who regularly and faithfully come to you. We cry out to you for the creation we’ve damaged, and the injustice of those in poverty facing the consequences. Spark in us a passion to pray and act for a better future. Amen.
