Why should we work? 

God knows our work environment very well. He knows all the challenges and successes. If we are to serve God in this environment, the question arises as to who came up with the idea of work in the first place? Are we yielding to a worldly principle, or did God have something in mind regarding work?  

In Genesis 2:15 tells us how God created us as a counterpart and how he created us from the beginning to work. This was not in a sadistic sense, but to steward the earth and to take care all living creatures (cf. Genesis 1:28). In other words, whether you are a pastor, construction worker, elementary school teacher, entrepreneur, or homemaker, work is rooted in God's good creation and is meant to reflect His glory. 

Because of the Fall, God's original ideas for mankind and for work were destroyed. So, we live in this world and we work to survive and must toil our "whole life long" (Genesis 3:17), while the proverbial "thorns and thistles" (Genesis 3:18) complicate our daily work. 

The good news is: through the crucified Jesus, we may experience a restoration of his original idea. We have access to heavenly resources (ideas, power, wisdom) and may walk with Jesus in our work. For example, we may seek wisdom from God at any time (James 1:5). We may know that we may go to God again and again (Hebrews 4:16). As Jesus has the father say in the end to the older son in his parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:31), "Child, you are always with me, and all I have is yours," He says this to you today. All that is his (wisdom, power, ideas, etc.,) he gladly makes available to you. The question is: will you collect it?

Where has work always seemed like a curse or a burden to you? You can consciously exchange these feelings on the cross for God's original idea of work. Just tell him what you leave on the cross and receive his thoughts.
