THE WISDOM OF JAMES: For Life In God's WorldSample
It’s not fashionable these days to talk about sin, but it’s a crucial biblical concept. Today James tells us that our desires and temptations need to be recognised for what they are and resisted and kept in check so that they will not lead us to the path of sin and death. Temptations arise from our own desire which puts us on a dangerous path. It’s not the desire itself that is sinful, but these desires need to be handled carefully and firmly lest they lead us astray. The story of Jesus going to the cross should remind us of the seriousness with which he takes our rebellion, but also the lavish grace he offers us. These verses from James are therefore probably a good reminder for some of us not to be too down on ourselves over our unwanted desires—God can deal with those. For others of us, it’s worth hearing the seriousness of James’ warning. We can learn to view God with appropriate reverence and at the same time relax into his grace towards us.
Q, We all have our weaknesses. Identify areas of your own life that could potentially lead you away from God and towards sin. What are some practical steps you could take to avoid these weaknesses and vulnerabilities damaging your relationship with God?
Prayer
Loving Father, please forgive me for allowing my desires to give birth to sin. Please grant me your Spirit’s power to live the life you have called me to. Amen.

About this Plan
The book of James provides practical wisdom for living God’s way in God’s world. Over the next 14-days, we will examine James’ exhortation for us to look like true believers. There are real rewards in giving this book attention and seeking to apply it to our lives. It has application as to how we might relate to materialism, consumerism and individualism – which make it incredibly relevant to our culture.
