UNcomfortable

DAY 2 OF 5

Not too long ago, I started going to the gym on a regular schedule.

My team at work has seen me walking into the office much slower than I normally do, as my legs burn from the trauma that they have endured the night before. I make jokes about it, I ache and I groan, but I still show up to the gym. This isn’t my norm, I know that. Naturally, my flesh is not willing to work out, but I force myself to do so. I am aware of the benefits, I know the possibility of growth that this new change has on my life, but it doesn’t make the process any less uncomfortable.

I am also aware that going to the gym and living a healthier lifestyle is the number one New Year’s resolution, and resolutions often go unfulfilled. I have made the decision, however, that I will be the exception, not the average. The pain will lead to progress. I can’t say that I’m completely comfortable walking into the gym. I can’t say that I’m comfortable doing these exercises and I can’t say that I’m comfortable being sore all day long the following day. But, I can say that it gets easier. The discomfort that you will feel today will make it easier on you the next time.

When you’re in a period of discomfort, it is often all that you can focus on. You see, we as people think in the now.

“Right now, I don’t know if I can do that.”

“Right now, I’m really having a hard time.”

“Right now, I wish that I could be anywhere but here.”

But God doesn’t view life based on right now. He has seen the beginning and ending of every story. He is the author and finisher. He knows what you have faced, what you will face, and ultimately, what you will become.

Discomfort almost always leads to growth. The path just isn’t always straight and narrow, but that’s okay! God has made us in His image. We are strong, and perhaps more importantly, we are resilient.

If you’re uncomfortable right now, embrace it. Follow it, and find out where the discomfort takes you.
