The Missing Link: From Fear to Courage

DAY 3 OF 3

Day 3: Courage

“I don’t like going upstairs when it’s dark! I’m afraid.”

These were the words of my 5-year-old son as he realized that the pathway to getting from mommy to daddy had an unlit family room and a set of stairs he would have to climb alone.

"I know that God is with me, but I am still afraid.”

That was such a real statement that I think we can all relate to. When he said it, I felt a strong nudging that we were about to have a divine moment. So I said to him,

"Well let me call daddy and tell him to meet you at the top of the stairs. I will be down here and he will be right at the top. Will that make you feel better?”

With a huge smile he said, 'Yes' and after he heard his father's footsteps heading to the stairs, he jumped up, ran through the dark family room, up the stairs, and into his father's arms.

Comfort serves notice to our deepest fear that Courage is on the way.

I did not remove the thing that my son was afraid of. The 'darkroom' and stairs were still there. I gave him comfort which in turn gave him the courage he needed to run through the dark to my husband.

‘Fear Not’ is said to be the most repeated command in the bible. 365 times we are commanded not to fear. Coincidence? I think not. God wants us to be reminded daily that we do not have to fear because he has left us a comforter (the Holy Spirit) and when we accept his comfort, we are given courage.

So today, evict fear, invite comfort, and embrace courage.
