The Joy of the LordSample
Joy For the Journey by Pastor Dion Maeda
Senior Pastor of Connect Point Church – Big Island, Hawaii
Scripture
Psalm 4:6-7 Many people say, “Who will show us better times?” Let your face smile on us, Lord. You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine.
Observation
Often called an ‘Evening Prayer,’ this was a song of trust from Israel’s great hymnbook. David is likely writing this Psalm while fleeing his rebellious son, Absalom. It appears that David’s friends have also turned against him saying that it would be better if he wasn’t living here on earth. The day was long, hard, exhausting, and filled with troubles from family and friends. Before the night closes, Psalmist David composes yet another song of great trust in God, while facing great trials and testing in his life. His song allowed him to sleep in peace and have a good night rest despite his trying circumstances. He understood that all it takes is one look from God to turn everything around. One shining moment of favor from God could turn his grief to grace; changing the trauma of his child chasing him, to a transformational moment of singing praises to his God. David understood this song was praising God in advance which allowed him to have joy for the journey.
Application
When we face great trials and testing’s, when family, friends and others turn against us, don’t run away from God but draw near to God in prayer, praise and singing. God has a smile on His face, allow God to shine His light, love and favor on your life.
Prayer
God, we thank you for what You have done in our past. How You rescued us, delivered us, saved us, and provided for us. We thank you for what You are doing in this moment in our lives. While we may be facing great trials and difficulties in our life, we don’t run away from You, we run to You, with thankfulness and praise in our hearts. Put a new song in our heart to sing praises to You. We trust in You that Your favor and grace is enough for us. All it takes is one touch, or one look from You to change everything in our lives. We praise You in advance for what You will do. Fill us with Your Joy for the journey ahead.
Reflection
What difficulty are you currently facing in your life? Before you lay in bed tonight, put on a song and sing a song of prayer, praise, and trust in God. You will see God fill you with His Joy for the journey.
