DAY 88 OF 90

Week 13

Proverbs 8

The True Source of Wisdom

When Solomon became king, God asked him what he wanted. Solomon didn’t ask for riches nor power—no, he asked for wisdom. Wisdom, though vital in living a well-ordered life, seems like a limited resource in our current cultural moment. The question is: How do we get it? Thankfully, Proverbs 8 shows us the way.

True wisdom comes from God. He reveals some wisdom through creation, but if we really want to grow in wisdom, we need to go to the source. In Proverbs 9, we learn that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Prov 9:10). If wisdom comes from God, we can know wisdom by knowing God. This means that the way that we make decisions will align more closely with God’s character.

And how do we know God? We study His Word. The Bible is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16) and fully sufficient for hearing from God. Prayer and the godly counsel of others are also important in helping the truths of scripture imbed themselves into our lives.

James 1:5 tells us that if we ask God for wisdom, He will give it to us. God wants us to make wise decisions and He will help us see all of life through His eyes. This search for wisdom is not without hope, and God did not command us to search for wisdom with our own resources. He provided us the supreme teacher and model for wisdom – His Son. Jesus is actually the wisdom of God personified (1 Cor 1:24) and He lived for us, died for us, and rose again for us so that we can reflect that wisdom to a broken world.

Family Connection: How does Proverbs 8 help us parent? It whispers to us the open secret revealed throughout creation. God’s cheerful wisdom is displayed in the simple realities of everyday human life, including family life. Bring the joy of God into your home this week and thank Him for it in front of your kids - for laughter, fun, games, walks, naps, and delicious food!
