Journey Through the Gospel of JohnSample
The Structure of John
John is a fascinating Gospel that reveals who Jesus is in very specific ways:
1. John describes miracles as “signs.” (We’ll learn why in the next lesson.)
2. John highlights unique conversations that are not in the other Gospels. (Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, the woman caught in adultery, and other stories are only in John’s Gospel.)
3. Jesus describes himself using “I AM” statements. (This identifies him as the God of Israel.)
It turns out that this Gospel is organized in bundles that combine these elements. We’ve color-coded this outline to make it easier to see.
Jot down your answers to these questions:
How many signs are there? (Notice a final sign at the end.)
What do you think the connection might be between each sign and the related conversations and “I AM” statements?
Read John 2 and see how the first sign is described. What are the responses to this sign?
