Wondered by the Word — The Bible in a YearSample
Walking in Obedience
Key Verse: Exodus 40:16
“This Moses did; according to all that the LORD commanded him, so he did.”
When the Lord commanded Moses to do something, he did it. Isn’t this what should be said of each of us? The Lord commanded something, and immediately we did it.
Generally, immediately isn’t the description I use about things. I’m more of a let’s-pray-about-it type and let’s make sure this is actually what the Lord needs me to do. Not that there's anything wrong with praying about something before doing it, but once commanded, we should do what God needs us to do with a joyful heart and immediately.
What about you? How are you doing on working on things that the Lord has commanded you to do?
Here in Exodus, God is instructing Moses on the building of the tabernacle. We’re not here building temples nor arks. But we are here to be a part of building the kingdom. Commands like go and tell, love God, and love others are easily the commands we see for ourselves. But are we doing them naturally? Are we out in the world telling people the Good News as we’ve been commanded? Are we doing these things at all?
It’s not easy to obey immediately. It’s sometimes not even easy to obey at all. But the tabernacle wasn’t easy either. Neither was the cross. But the obedience we find throughout Scripture is what is inspiring. That other broken and imperfect people faithfully obeyed. Because of their obedience (and the obedience of others), we have the Bible and the foundation of the Church.
Whatever this day, week, month, year, lifetime entails, I pray that we each obey all that God commands us through faith. So that we get to be witnesses to all the things that He continues to do in this world and our lives. What a gift it is to see the obedience of others, and what a gift it is for others to witness our obedience. Let’s be a group of people who shine brightly for God through our faith and our obedience.
