Wondered by the Word — The Bible in a Year

DAY 323 OF 365

A Life of Constant Prayer

Key Verse: Thessalonians 5:16

Washing dishes. Folding laundry. Breaking up sibling fights. Changing diapers.

These are all things that I feel like I do “constantly.” The truth is, I do a lot more than that (although, some days it’s not much more). In 24 hours, it’s pretty much impossible to do something constantly except for maybe one thing: prayer.

In his letter to the church of Thessalonica, Paul commands the people to pray constantly. This may seem like an overstatement or exaggeration, but I really believe Paul knew the power of an uninterrupted connection with God. The amazing truth is, we have a direct line to God, and we’re invited to approach Him with confidence.

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

Time of need? That’s definitely a constant for me. In some moments, I need strength. In others, I need comfort. Throughout the day I need God to remind me of His grace so that I can extend it to others. There’s not a minute that passes I don’t need the presence of God.

I think this is why Paul was so direct in his command to pray continually. He knew that the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective (James 5:16).

So how do you live a life of constant prayer? Remember that your Heavenly Father longs to hear from you and bends down to listen (Psalm 116:2). In everything, big and small, submit it to God. Talk to Him, out loud or in your thoughts — He hears both. Keep a prayer journal on your kitchen counter as a reminder to lift your needs and others’ needs to God throughout the day. When a child or friend comes to you with a burden, stop and pray.

What a gift to know that we are just a breath away from communing with our Creator!
