The More You Know, the More You Love

Key Verse: 2 Samuel 7:21

“Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it.”

What would it mean to live a life totally in awe of God? If we understood His promises, heart, and the greatness He brings...how can we not live a life totally in awe?

When we understand the character of God, we get to see His heart. He is loving, kind, merciful, omniscient, and more. We see the softness that comes from these characteristics. He is also just, judge, and wrath. He will judge fairly and punish rightly. He’s promised us all of this, and even though we know we don’t deserve His mercy, He gives it. He gives faith and grace, and through that, we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9).

George Whitefield said, “Study to know Him more and more, for the more you know, the more you will love Him.”

What Whitefield is saying is exactly what David is talking about. There are debates on who the author of 2 Samuel is, but the author is recording David’s reign as king. This verse, 2 Samuel 7:21, comes out of David’s prayer of gratitude. Throughout the entire prayer (v. 18-29), David is praising God. It’s about who God is and how even through all the ups and downs, He is who He says He is.

Revelation 22:13 tells us that He is the Alpha and the Omega. We know He never changes. David knew that and worshipped God through it all.

David shows us that we need to study God’s Word to know what promises God has made. If we lack knowledge, we might miss the promises or fall for something that was never even promised to begin with. What a joy it is to get to know who God is. What a joy and gift it is to be able to worship Him in His glory! God will use it all, what we consider good and bad, to make us see His glory. That in itself is such a gift that we should only repay with more worship.
