Untangling Truth

DAY 6 OF 6

Finding Common Ground

Why is it so difficult to disagree without getting all ugly? Disagreements bring out a lot of strong emotions in people. And, um, it might have something to do with being human and generally bent toward sin. Ugh.

But, don’t worry! Growing in every way more and more like Jesus will help you to disagree without resorting to name-calling or shutting people out for good. It will help you to feel confidence from God when you know you need to speak out against something that’s hurting other people.

Yesterday, Judo Bob taught you how grace and truth go hand in hand when you’re trying to connect with someone. Today, you’ll learn some more big stuff from a tiny book about how to disagree in a way that’s filled with both grace and truth. Watch this!

Did you catch all that? Because there were some amazing tips on how to find common ground and untangle that tension! Here’s a recap of those great strategies.

1. Love people without motive. Whether or not someone agrees with you, love them. Start with a foundation of love.
2. Listen to understand, not to be right. This will keep you humble and patient. Pause and consider before you speak.
3. Find eye contact and common ground. Wait, like, a staring contest? No! Just remember that your body language and tone are important—and those can be lost with online arguments. See if you can speak together in person or by video chat. And remember to uncross your arms, uncrinkle your eyebrows, and keep a neutral tone of voice.

Truth. It’s a powerful thing. Lead with grace when you’re speaking truth, and that’s even more powerful! That’s living like Jesus.

Ask yourself: What’s the most important thing you feel God taught you while reading this Bible Plan?

Challenge yourself: Grab some paper and something to draw with. Draw a picture that represents your answer from the “Ask yourself” question above. Hang that picture somewhere you’ll see it often until you’re sure that lesson has been deeply rooted in your heart.

Pray: God, thank You for everything I’ve learned about Your truth. I know that all truth comes from You. I know that You are the one who helps me untangle lies out of my heart and mind. I know You help me to learn what truth is. Please help me to speak up for truth in a grace-filled, respectful, and loving way. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day 5

About this Plan

Untangling Truth

Is anything always true, or are things just “true for me” and “true for you”? And, when I feel strongly that I believe the truth—and you feel strongly that something different is true—how are we supposed to get along? This Bible Plan for preteens is here to help answer those questions! You’ll learn the lifelong habit of untangling truth from the mess of false teaching and tense conversations.
