Through the Bible: Genesis

DAY 11 OF 15

Jealousy

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him.
Genesis 37:3 (NIV)
His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
Genesis 37:11 (NIV)
You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?
1 Corinthians 3:3 (NIV)

Jacob’s favouritism towards Joseph had made his brothers jealous and they eventually sold him into slavery. Jealousy hardened their hearts and blinded them to sin.

Jealousy is nothing more than the inability to see what God has given us and a lack of gratitude. It is self-destructive and can take away our peace. What Joseph’s brothers did had disturbed their consciences and distressed them for over twenty years (Genesis 42:21). As Christians, we should always trust in God’s provisions and His sovereignty over our lives. We were created as a unique person, and God has a special plan for each of us. Count our blessings instead of other's.

Jealousy is the opposite of love. We’re called to love. “Love does no harm to a neighbour. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). A clear indicator that the Holy Spirit is working in us is our contentment. Instead of experiencing jealousy, we’re then able to genuinely celebrate the blessings of others.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for helping us understand how dangerous jealousy can be. Help us when we feel jealous, overflow us with Your perfect love instead because we know that what You’ve given us is more than enough. Amen.

About this Plan

Through the Bible: Genesis

Everyone has an origin. It explains why we are here, and who we really are. But what about the origin of mankind? The answer lies in the book of Genesis, which means “in the beginning”. The book will help us understand the beginning of creation, the fall of mankind and unfolds God’s redemptive plan for humanity. Please join us as we journey Through The Bible starting with Genesis.
