Mary's Song: My Soul Glorifies the LordSample
Day Three
Mary Proclaims God’s Power, Holiness and Mercy
Mary proclaims God's power is manifested in two specific ways. First, the promised Messiah is now to be born. The hope of the world is now to be fulfilled after so many generations of waiting, wandering, exile, and affliction. Second, God’s power is demonstrated in a way never before witnessed. The promised Messiah is to be born of a virgin. A miracle is to be performed! As Mary testifies, “the Mighty One has done great things for me.”
Mary proclaims God's holiness. She sings “Holy is His name”; that is, God is to be set apart as different from all others. His very nature and being are different. God is both pure being and pure in being, both perfect being and perfect in being. God is holy in name and holy in being, set apart and different from all others.
Mary proclaims God’s glorious mercy to her. He had proven to be her personal savior. Like the author of Lamentations, she is saying that God’s mercies never end because they are new every morning. God reveals His glorious mercy by sending the Messiah to those who revere Him. Note that Mary saw God’s mercy passing down from generation to generation.
For Reflection
- On what attributes of God do you often meditate?
- Why does it make a difference that we worship a holy God?
- What are some ways that God has shown you mercy?
- What are some ways God has shown mercy to previous generations of your family tree?
About this Plan
My soul glorifies the Lord!” begins Mary's song-- traditionally known as the Magnificat. It is a magnificent song about God, His Glorious Mercy, and His Deliverance. Mary’s song points us to answer the question, “What is my purpose in life?”
