When You Don't Like Your Story - 5 Day Devotional

DAY 4 OF 5

The story of what God has done in your life makes him real to those who hear it. Some might balk at biblical principles or try to argue with theology, but they can’t deny a person’s personal experience. Stories capture listeners’ attention, draw them into the narrative, and stir emotions. People have a natural curiosity about the dark side or struggles of others. Whether or not the listeners’ stories are similar to the teller’s is not important. Everyone wants to be better than they are at the moment, whether or not they voice that longing. Hearing about how that happened in someone else’s life is magnetic. . . .

In the church, we use the word testimony when someone gives an account of what God has done in their lives. Most of the time folks think of a testimony as a salvation story. However, a testimony could be so much more. Coming to Christ is only the beginning—the first page in many exciting chapters to come. It may be the turning point of someone’s story, but it is never meant to be the end. A testimony is any recounting of what God has done in a person’s life. “Let me tell you about what God did for me at the grocery store.” “Let me tell you about what God taught me on my walk today.” “Let me tell you how God healed my son.” “Let me tell you how God restored my marriage.” Testimonies, all.
