DAY 19 OF 25

The Name Of The Saviour

There are nearly two hundred references, names, and titles given to Jesus in the Word of God. They reveal the different aspects of His character and nature, as well as the work that He did and continues to do in our lives. Among these names are:

  • The Alpha and Omega
  • The Bright and Morning Star
  • The Good Shepherd
  • The Bread of Life
  • The Way, the Truth, and the Life
  • Emmanuel
  • Messiah

The list goes on and on, but no other name so fully captures the life and purpose of the Saviour than the name that the angel gave to Him before He was born—Jesus. The very name means “one who saves or delivers,” and that is why Jesus left the glory and honor of Heaven to come into the world to live among sinful men. That is why He was willing to go to the cross as an innocent sacrifice to pay for our sins. That is why He laid down His life so that we could be saved.

The name of Jesus is truly the sweetest name, because of all that it conveys. And God has decreed that all men will acknowledge Him either in this life or at the judgment: “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9–11).

Today’s Discipleship Principle: Give thanks today to God for the amazing, indescribable gift of a Saviour in the person of Jesus Christ.
