Mind’s Eye
Learning of this father’s plea with Jesus in Mark 9, "I believe; help my unbelief," is refreshing and affirming. It is affirming that this plea is granted. It is affirming that even his admitting a level of unbelief is more honorable to Jesus than when you simply don't get it but pretend that you do.
Our hearts understand the prayer of the father in Mark 9. We often pray the same thing. We all have moments of strong faith and other moments we need God to meet us in a more profound way. When you lack faith, you need to ask Jesus to help fulfill what you lack.
We know our faith is weak at times. We know this because there are moments when prayer comes naturally. There are moments when we have such a clear glimpse of God that we hold on to it and squeeze every bit of life out of that moment.
When the father admits he does have faith but asks for help in his lack of faith, you see Jesus meet this father in the profound way we all need and crave. Jesus meets us in honesty.
Sometimes we only need to pray and continue to pray to the God we only half believe in, and He will meet us tenderly in return. Or, we could remain a faithless generation who pretends we have all the faith in the world, but no fruit is evident.
