Poor Me! Sample
Let It Go
Sometimes when I feel sorry for myself, it’s because someone has said something or done something that violated my expectancies or hurt my feelings.
And as soon as those “poor me” or “how dare they?” thoughts go round in my head a few times, inevitably I become completely consumed with my own world and what’s happening in it. I become the center of my own attention, the star of my own misery show. I cease to think of anyone but myself. When I start to have a self-pity party, I’ve elevated my own importance in my own eyes.
Romans 12:3 has something to say about that: For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think…
The moment I let life’s hurts and injustices dictate my emotions, I’m thinking too highly of myself. Self-pity can lead to bitterness, and that can quickly override the fruit of the Spirit which should be dominating my life.
So whenever I get that “poor me” feeling, I ask myself, “Is there anyone I need to forgive?” Yes, life can be painful and messy, but I am not going to let those moments define me. I’m going to rise up and put it behind me. The fastest way I’ve found to do that is to forgive and simply let it go.
Mark 11:25 says, Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him and let it drop (leave it, let it go), in order that your Father Who is in heaven may also forgive you your [own] failings and shortcomings and let them drop (AMPC). That verse says it all.
I decided that I’m not some fragile creature who needs to be watched and worried over. I’m a grown-up, and I can be resilient when stuff gets thrown at me. I’m the one who forgives! Quickly and easily! I’m going to get into the Word, put my shoulders back, keep my head up, and determine to put the past behind and move forward. Want to join me?
