21 Days of Discipleship

DAY 9 OF 21

The Blind Leading the Blind

John 9 is a big chapter. It holds the sixth of the seven special signs we talked about on day two. The signs that point to who Jesus is and why He came. On the Jewish holy day, the Sabbath, Jesus gives the gift of sight to a man who had been blind all his life.

We get a powerful picture of Jesus, and also a representation of discipleship in the response of the formerly blind man. He boldly and unashamedly stands before the temple officials and tells what Jesus has done in his life. Despite these men hurling insults at him, the blind man still gives glory to God. He even goes so far as to ask if they want to be Jesus’ disciples too!

Here’s his testimony:

“Ever since the world began, no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind. If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.” John 9:32-33 NLT

As a result of this statement, the man is thrown out of the temple and the officials remain blind to the truth of who Jesus is. Still, the man who received the miracle attempted to lead others to the Miracle Worker.

Here’s the thing, the greatest miracle of all is one that we all have access to. And those of us who are in Christ have already received it—it’s the miracle of salvation. Remember, friends, we weren’t just not okay in our sin or like a little bit infected; we were dead. And Jesus brought us back to life!

What the blind man teaches us is that, as people who have received a miracle, we have a responsibility to help lead others to the Miracle Worker.

Challenge: Disciples of Jesus recognize that we are recipients of a miracle! This should inspire us every moment of every day to want to lead others to the One who restored us! Now we get to ask, like this man asked, “Do you want to become His disciple too?” Who is someone who needs to hear about the miracle Jesus has done in your life? Boldly share your story today.

About this Plan

21 Days of Discipleship

“Come, follow Me.” This is the call of Christ. But what does it look like to be an every-moment Jesus follower? John, one of Jesus’ closest friends, gives us insight and challenges us to know Jesus, believe Jesus, and model our lives after Jesus every day. We will walk through this book chapter by chapter, learning to take Jesus seriously and follow Him fully.
