21 Days of Discipleship

DAY 16 OF 21

Jedi Masters and Messages from Heaven

Jesus continues teaching and preparing His disciples to follow Him when He’s no longer physically with them. And in this chapter, Jesus introduces them to their greatest asset—the Holy Spirit.

Jesus explains: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” John 16:13 NIV

We have a Guide, One who takes all His cues from Jesus. He leads us to the truth and warns us of what’s ahead. He’s like our own personal Jedi master, training us, not in the ways of the force, but in the Way of Jesus! We can be 100% confident in how the Holy Spirit prompts us because His directions are incoming messages from heaven.

Jesus literally said it was to our advantage that He left and the Spirit came. How could anything possibly be better than actually being with Jesus? Because while Jesus led externally, the Spirit leads internally. Jesus ascended to heaven, not so that He would be removed from us, but so that He would actually be even closer to us by His Spirit, who is at work in us! When we give Him space to operate in us, He fills us with hope and power to follow Jesus even more closely. This internal guidance and motivation flows into action and ultimately transformation.

Still a little confusing? Think about a remote-controlled car. You can manually push it around and make it go where you want it to go. However, when you put a fully charged battery inside of it and steer with the controller, you’re no longer in direct contact with the car, but it’s a heck of a better way to drive!

That’s what Jesus was saying. He wouldn’t be in direct physical contact with His disciples anymore, but the Holy Spirit would bring a power to the equation that would make following Jesus even better!

Challenge: How can you learn to recognize and receive the signals of the Spirit? Start today by creating space for Him to come and work in your life. Write down a prayer for awareness and obedience. Don’t go another day passing over the power that Jesus said was such a great advantage!

About this Plan

21 Days of Discipleship

“Come, follow Me.” This is the call of Christ. But what does it look like to be an every-moment Jesus follower? John, one of Jesus’ closest friends, gives us insight and challenges us to know Jesus, believe Jesus, and model our lives after Jesus every day. We will walk through this book chapter by chapter, learning to take Jesus seriously and follow Him fully.
