Several states have taken advantage of the Supreme Court's 1963 ruling that, while they cannot conduct sectarian worship services, public schools can provide objective instruction in religious beliefs, literature, and history. Michigan, Wisconsin, and California approved religious studies. Florida certifies teachers for objective instruction in biblical literature. Similar courses are underway in several other states.
Just before his death, Louis Cassels wrote: "This can happen in all states if parents and church folk care enough. It is not the Constitution or the Supreme Court but adult apathy which keeps America's youth in a state of religious illiteracy." Perhaps Mr. Cassels is right. We challenge everyone to encourage the inclusion of such courses in all of our schools.
At first we may meet opposition, but that should not stop us. Jesus felt an urgency about His ministry that defied discouragement. He knew the night was coming. May we feel the same urgency.
