You're Not Alone

Day 3

I must say, there are times our focus can be on Jesus, and that we are taking up our cross every day, and yet we still wonder:  What am I doing here? 

I believe this to be a common theme among those who are after God’s heart.  My pastor in Nashville used to say, "If you ever ask the Lord to change you, to mold your heart, and you truly mean it, prepare to buckle up."

There is no greater joy than knowing and following Jesus, but don't let anyone tell you it's going to be easy. 

The truth is we're either going into a tough season, in one, or just coming out of one.  Rarely, are there extended periods without some kind of disappointment.  

I have some friends who’s son has been battling cancer for several years.  Of course, they want to be there, past all of the heartaches that just never seem to end.  But I’ve never seen a family more devoted to the present, delighting themselves in the Lord.  I can only imagine the blessings God has in store for them.

I'm sure you know somebody going through a similar circumstance, or you might be going through one yourself.  I'm so sorry.  I pray the Lord gives you strength.  Stay in the Word.  It will feed your soul.

As I read through the Bible, it’s comforting to find that the struggles so many of the characters faced are just like mine.  They too often asked themselves, “What am I doing here?” 

One of my favorite stories about this is of David, before he became King David.  David was on the right path.  But man, was it ever rocky as he fled day and night for his life from the most powerful man in all of Israel, King Saul, who knew that David was his ordained replacement on the throne.  Saul, though, wasn’t going to have it.

I’m energized for you to read about one of David’s experiences as he hid from Saul within an enemy's camp.  How did he do this, you ask?  Talk about asking yourself, “What am I doing here?  I should be there!”  You have to read this story, and when you do, imagine the thoughts that David, a man after God’s own heart, felt.
