Spirit: Helper, Guide, GodSample
The Holy Spirit is God
The Holy Spirit is not a what, but a who. He is not a force but a person. He is God.
As Christians, we believe in one God, who exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You won’t find the word “trinity” in the Bible, but you’ll see references to it everywhere.
When Jesus is baptized, the Holy Spirit descends, and God speaks (Luke 3:22). When Jesus returns to heaven, He tells us to baptize others in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).
Father, Son, and Spirit are fully God, equal in power and glory. While each person of the Trinity has a distinct role in our lives, they are one in purpose, essence, and nature.
Confused? Got questions about how this works? You’re not alone.
And to be honest, there’s not a good comparison. We can’t look to anyone or anything and say, “God being three in one is like ...” Every analogy breaks down eventually because no one is like our God.
Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that “without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” To believe that God is three in one is a mystery we accept in faith.
God is not a math problem we can solve. This journey to get to know the Holy Spirit will require us to accept that God’s ways are higher than ours and that we’re going to see things in Scripture that we don’t fully understand.
If you’re ready for that, then you’re ready to keep going.
About this Plan
Who is the Holy Spirit? What’s His role in our lives? For some, the Holy Spirit is a dear friend. For others, He’s a bit of a mystery. For the next seven days, get to know the Holy Spirit and discover why Jesus said it was better for Him to leave, so that the Holy Spirit could come (John 16:7).
