In My Boat: Trusting God in the Midst of the Storm Sample
Walk the Talk
I once heard of a town that was experiencing a drought, and so the local church decided to pray for rain. On the D-Day when it was expected to rain, everyone showed up in church but only one little girl showed up with an umbrella.
Believing in God is more than singing the loudest when your favorite faith song comes up. It is more than memorizing all the verses of Scripture that define faith and definitely more than listening to and being able to recount all the faith stories of Jesus, Abraham, and other intriguing Bible or modern day characters of faith. Faith without works is not faith at all.
One stormy night out on the lake, Peter calls out to Jesus. Jesus beckons to him to come. This is the position many of us are in. We are stuck in a storm and we have cried out to Jesus to calm the storm for us so that we can navigate our boats safely to shore. While that may be our humanly conceived plan, God may be saying to you, “I will calm the storm but I do not want you in this boat anymore. Come on out.”
The question is, do you believe God enough to leave your boat? Before you scream yes, let's slow that down a bit. You may be in a great job you have been working at for four or five years, and God is saying, “I would like for you to step out." You may be in a relationship that has been going on for the past six years and you want it to move to the next level of marriage. You may have started a business that is a money spinner and you can already see your name on Forbes List but God is saying, "Step out; come walk on water with Me."
I can imagine many of us immediately questioning the voice of God the way Peter questioned Jesus by asking, “Is that really you God?” (Matthew 14:28).
What is the challenge today? Do not box God in. Do not limit Him. He is full of surprises. What is the boat He is asking you to step out of? Walk the faith talk. Step out of that boat today and watch Him do amazing things in your life.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Give me the grace to strengthen my faith so I can step out of this boat and walk on water with You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
