In My Boat: Trusting God in the Midst of the Storm

DAY 12 OF 14

In My Boat

Who is in your boat? Jonah’s fellow passengers had to ask themselves that question when they were faced with a storm. Jesus’ disciples also asked themselves the same question. It seems like when life throws a storm at you, your response to that storm will be determined by who else is in the boat with you. Also, Jonah’s story teaches us that sometimes our storm may be caused by the people in our boat.

As we journey through life, there are different categories of passengers that join our boat. The first is family. We never get to choose our family; they are somehow thrust upon us as we journey in life. We also create family if we get married or we create bonds that are so strong that they transcend friendship.

We also journey with friends, colleagues, jobs, relationships, faith—any of these may be in our boat at different points in time. The storms we face are often either caused by the people in our boat or can be successfully navigated with the help of the people in our boat. Jesus is always in our boat, so He is always available to take care of our storms. Some storms we can avoid altogether if we “throw some people out of our boat.” Not every relationship is fine. Even the Bible says: Do not be unevenly yoked with unbelievers. There are certain people who should not be in your boat and you should make sure to identify them and travel without them.

Prayer

Dear Father,

I pray that through the help of the Holy Spirit I may identify the people who should not be in my boat. I pray for the wisdom to navigate out of any storm caused by wrong company.

In Jesus‘ Name,

Amen.
