Our Need and His Supply
2 Peter 1:3-4
Have you ever showed up to something and realized that you are missing something? A device that you needed, information that’s important for a certain decision, or tickets that you left at home. Lacking something that you need or even the feeling of lacking something is always a cause for fear and concern. Questions about coming up short in an area of life become more sobering as we mature in life. Do I have what it takes for this job? Am I able to work through this problem? Will I be a good enough parent to my children? We all have our own list.
When these questions arise, we can find ourselves either celebrating what we have or lamenting what we believe is missing. Unfortunately, when the heat gets turned up in our lives, we can become borderline obsessive or devastated by not having something we want or need. The followers of Jesus who received this letter from Peter were vulnerable to the belief that they did not have all they needed to withstand the persecution they were experiencing.
But Peter says otherwise. He reminds these believers that they had everything they needed that pertains to life and godliness (v. 3). He reminds us that our main calling in life is to His glory and excellence; He has spared no expense to make sure we are equipped for that purpose, even though, from an earthly perspective, we may lose everything in the process. The Lord is our Savior, our Equipper, our Sustainer, and Our Everything.
Lord, thank You that with You, we have everything we need to live. Amen.
Family connection: Ask your family this week, "How does God give us precious and great promises?" We find the promises of God in His Word. As a family, select a verse of one of God's promises and write it in a place where you all will be reminded of it each day (e.g., Joshua 1:9, Hebrews 13:5, Isaiah 41:10, Romans 8:28).
