Read the Book: Fall Bible Plan

DAY 3 OF 103

Mordecai

Esther 1-5

What stands out throughout the beginning of the book of Esther is the faith and pillar of hope we see through Mordecai. We may be quick to reference the wise trust and courage from Queen Esther and what her story teaches, but when we look at Mordecai, we can see that his security was in God.

Look at the pattern of honor found through the actions of Mordecai. We see heavenly responses to earthly circumstances as he bowed to God rather than to his enemies or man, knowing opposition was probable but that His sovereignty was certain. I want that kind of eagerness to honor God rather than obey man when given the decision. I encourage you to look at his care for Esther, look at his responses from the King’s gate, look at his challenge to Esther in leading the Jews, see his pattern of honoring the Lord without expectation of circumstantial relief.

I want to propose a question: Do your actions and patience come from security in God’s sovereignty? What a comfort it is knowing that centuries later another One would obey God perfectly and actually die to not only save a particular people group from physical annihilation, but to save generations from the tyranny of their own sin.

God, let me not seek security in anything but you. Let me seek your provision by living day by day in faithful patience and understanding your providence by remaining in a posture of trust. Let what makes up my life be subject to you. Let me believe what you have for me is gain. You are worthy of my trust. Amen.

Family connection: God can use us — ordinary people — at any age to carry out His plans. Ask your family this week, “How does God carry out His plan?” Say a prayer of thanksgiving to God for loving us and choosing to use us to spread His loving kindness to others.
