Welcome the Wilderness Sample
God Whispers
There are a million and one things on your to-do list: pick up the kids, do the laundry (dirty and clean), get the groceries for the week, take a test, go to a dentist appointment. There’s barely enough time for you every week, let alone time to sit still with God.
Sometimes in the busyness, we wait for God to work out something huge and move like a mighty wind to prove he is still moving at all.
That’s where Elijah was in 1 Kings 19:12: “And after the earthquake, a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”
God wasn’t in the mighty wind. He wasn’t in the ground-shaking moment or the magnificent fire. He was the whisper. Elijah would have missed the quiet sound if he hadn’t been in the wilderness.
You’ll miss the whisper, too, in the chaos. That’s why God sometimes takes us out to the wilderness . . . so we can hear him better.
