Better Words, Better Actions: PraiseLive's 30 Day Devotional

DAY 16 OF 30

Our oldest son was not in a hurry to get his driver's license when he turned 16. The schedules for our busy family of five were scattered, so having an extra driver would have helped. Each day I rushed to three after school carpool lines, darted through traffic only to sit, and wait in the hot car for practice, games, or lessons to end then head to the next destination. When he did decide he was ready to drive, my first thought was FREEDOM, and I can guarantee I wasn't alone. His first thought as he tucked the car keys in the pocket of his gym shorts was also FREEDOM!!

However, before he got too excited about making plans, we explained that this newly awarded freedom came with responsibility and the opportunity to bless others. Running errands for Nana, picking up siblings were all things he'd get to do while enjoying the flexibility of using a car. He wasn't initially excited but quickly enjoyed the sense of purpose that came with balancing freedom and responsibility.

Funny how thinking back on the lesson we were trying to teach him is a glaring reminder of the responsibilities and opportunities we have as believers.

In Galatians, Paul gave us instructions to govern the freedom we have in Christ.

"do not let your freedom become an opportunity for the sinful nature (worldliness, selfishness), but through love, serve and seek the best for one another."

Easier said than done as we live in this unprecedented time of self-preservation. But people need help and we are free in Christ. This new normal is a wonderful opportunity to find unique ways to use the keys God gave us to serve in love, then enjoy an added sense of purpose.

Reflection Question

How can you be more intentional about serving others during this pandemic?

Praise + Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of freedom. Thank you for the purpose you give us for using our freedom to be a blessing. Please make us sensitive to the natural desire to be selfish then open our eyes to the possibilities in our home, community, and world to serve in love.

Action Idea:

  1. On your next zoom meeting or when you are getting in line while shopping, be the one to say "No, you first" or "After you."
  2. If you are a driver, take keys literally and look for a chance to run an errand or make a delivery for someone who is quarantined.
