Seven Letters: The Churches in RevelationSample
Day 6: The Church in Philadelphia
Philadelphia was a beautiful city also known as “Little Athens” or “the gateway to the East.” But they also had frequent earthquakes which would lead to evacuations.
GOOD WORK: Kept My Word
It’s really that simple. They kept Jesus’s Word. They were serious about what He said. They also relied on God and did not deny Jesus’s name. People are so quick to do that these days, but you can’t have Christianity without Christ. He once again tells this church that He knows their works and lists some of these things they have done.
Question for Reflection: What are the things you would want Jesus to know about you?
GET READY: Hold fast
Hold fast seems to be a trend in these letters. We have to hold fast to the solid foundation of God’s Word. When we do that He has made three promises to us in this letter. He will take care of our enemies, He will keep us from tribulation (from the Great Tribulation in Revelation), and He will honor us. He will make us a pillar in the temple of God, and we won’t be shaken. The Christians in Philadelphia didn’t have to worry about “earthquakes” because their foundation was in Him. Let’s be pillars for Jesus today!
Question for Reflection: How can you be a pillar for Jesus?
