The Gospels in 30

DAY 22 OF 30

Day 22

Luke 22-24

“Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.” Luke 24:35 ESV

The irony of the conversation on the road to Emmaus is hilarious. The two men ask Jesus, whom they did not recognize, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” (Luke 24:18)  Jesus, the only one who truly understood these things, plays dumb. “What things?” He responds. They begin to explain.

After Jesus opens up the scriptures to them, it says that He was made known to them in the “breaking of the bread.” Not many days before this, Jesus breaks bread with His disciples at the last supper. On two separate occasions, Jesus breaks bread to feed multitudes of people. Breaking bread must have been something that Jesus did regularly. It was likely something that only people who had spent sufficient time with Jesus would have recognized.

When we spend time with Jesus regularly, we start to recognize Him in what seems to be the ordinary. The more time we spend in His Word and in prayer, the more we see Him at work in our lives. It’s not that Jesus wasn’t working before, but now our eyes are open to it.

“And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.” Luke 24:31 ESV
